TheMassoretico-CriticaleditionoftheHebrewBibleisbasedonthe
ReceivedText(TextusReceptus),namelythatoftheSecondRabbinicBible
preparedbyJacobbenChayimin1524–25whichwasfaithfullypreserved
byDrChristianDavidGinsburgandpublishedin1894bytheTrinitarian
BibleSocietyinLondon.Boththetextandthenumerousfootnotesfoundin
Ginsburg’sMajorandMinorEditionspublishedbytheBritishandForeign
BibleSocietyforitsCentenarywerealsoextensivelyusedinthepreparation
ofthisvolume.
Themainfeaturesofthiseditionareasfollows:
Novariations,howeverstronglysupportedbytheHebrewmanuscripts
andprintededitionshavebeenintroducedintothetextbutwererele-
gatedtothemarginsandthefootnotes.
Thefootnotescontainimportantinformationaboutthetextualvari-
antsandfactsfromtheprintedMassorahpreservedfromperditionby
JacobbenChayimandDr.Ginsburg.Thetotalnumberoffootnotes
inthisrevisionis4500.
ThisisaverytraditionalancientMassoretictext,whichunderstands
andabidesbythestrictrulesoftransmittingtheHebrewScriptu-
resdownthroughthecenturies.Thus,featuresincludethecorrect
displayofclosedandopensections,sedarim,parashiyot,largeand
smallletters,dottedletters,invertednun,thecorrectuseofRapheand
theaccents,theMassoreticsummariesassociatedwiththeparashiyot
andbooksoftheTorah,etc.
Whilethemoderndivisionsofchaptersandversesarenotedforthe
sakeofconvenientreference,thetextisarrangedaccordingtothe
ancientchaptersandsectionaldivisionsoftheMassorahandtheMSS.,
whicharethusrestored.
Massoreticsummariesattheendofeachbookareforthefirsttime
(inaHebrewBibleeditionasfarasIknow)givenwiththeirEnglish
translations.
WeuniformlyreproducetheDageshedandRaphedletters,whichare
foundinallthebestMassoreticManuscripts,butwhichhavebeen
omittedinallthecurrentprintededitionsoftheHebrewBible.
TheancientMassoreticchapters,calledSedarim,arealsoindicatedin
themarginsagainsttheirrespectiveplaces.
