Bag from pages 18 and 25 – Instructions
Size: approx. 60 x 60 cm (24" x 24")
(12") open in center of bottom seam
for turning. Turn lining right side
out. Lay lining in bag, right sides
facing. Pin upper lining edges over
zipper tapes. Stitch along zipper
attachment seams, catching the
lining. Pull lining up, out of the bag.
To turn right side out, reach through
opening in lining seam, grab lower
edge of bag, and pull to outside. Lay
lining in bag, wrong sides facing,
folding the upper bag edges to the
inside along marked fold lines. Top-
stitch 8 cm (3 1 4 ") from upper edge of
bag.
Materials:
Quilted fabric, 135 cm (54") wide:
0.85 m (34").
Lining, 140 cm (55") wide: 0.55 m (22").
Piece of leather or imitation leather,
approx. 65 x 35 cm (26" x 14"). 1 sep-
arating 2-way zipper, 60 cm (24") long.
Cord, approx. 1.5 cm ( 5 8 ") Ø: 2.00 m
(2 1 4 yds). 4 D-rings, straight bar 3 cm
(1 1 4 ") long. 4 screw rivets (Internet) or
rivets to hammer in (Prym). For base,
heavy cardboard or pelmet inter-
facing S 133, 22 x 40 cm (8 3 4 " x 16").
Sewing thread. Textile glue (Rudolfix
or Gütermann HT2)

4. Base
For the base, lay the piece of card-
board or pelmet interfacing (22 x 40
cm /8 3 4 " x 16") through the opening
in the lining seam, into the bag. Sew
the narrow edges of the base piece
to the seam allowances of the corner
seams. Sew the opening in the lining
seam closed. Close the zipper.
Recommended fabrics: Fabrics with
some body.
When basting and stitching, the
right fabric sides should be facing.
Tie-off beginnings and ends of
seams with backstitching.
Preparing pattern pieces:
Follow cm measurements in diagrams
below to make full-sized pattern
pieces for bag and tab from tissue
paper. Strap outlines can be drawn
directly on leather (see “Cutting”).
1. Zipper
Separate zipper halves. Pin each half
to upper edge of bag piece, with
outer side of zipper facing right side
of fabric. Zipper teeth lie toward
bag piece and zipper tapes lie on
allowances. The lower zipper ends
lie 1.5 cm ( 5 8 ") from marked side
seam line. Stitch zipper tapes in
place (1).
5. Tabs
For each tab, glue 2 tab pieces
together, wrong sides facing. Fold
the narrow end of each doubled tab
over the straight bar of a D-ring,
along marked fold line, and glue
narrow end to back side of tab (4).
Pin tabs to bag, each
placed 15 cm (6")
from side seam and
with upper edge of
tab 1 cm ( 3 8 ") below
upper edge of bag.
Topstitch 5 mm (a
scant 1 4 ") from all
edges of each tab to attach.

2 straps, 62 cm (24 1 2 ") long and 7 cm
(2 3 4 ") wide, finished width 3.5 cm (1 3 8 ").
Cut out bag, lining, and strap pieces,
adding 1 cm ( 3 8 ") wide allowances to all
edges. Cut out tab pieces with no allow-
ances.
Baste along fold lines to make them
visible from right side of the fabric.
2. Sewing bag pieces together
Lay bag pieces together, right sides
facing. Stitch together along side
and lower edges (2). Press seams
open. To stitch each lower corner,
fold bag so that lower seam lies on
side seam, right side facing in. Pin
corner seam. Stitch (3).
6. Straps
On each strap piece, fold allowances
on long edges (1 cm/ 3 8 " wide) to
wrong side and glue in place. Fold
strap in half lengthwise, wrong side
facing in. Edgestitch open edges
together. From the cord, cut 4
pieces, each 48 cm (19") long. Pull 2
cords next to one another into each
strap, using a safety pin as bodkin.
Make sure that the same amount of
strap is without cords on each end.
Fold each strap end (without cord)
so that the seam lies in the center.
Fold these strap ends over the D-
rings, 3.5 cm (1 1 2 ") wide, and secure
with rivets.

Lay several tucks in the bag as illus-
trated, each approx. 6 cm (2 1 2 ") deep,
and secure with a few stitches.
If desired, cut a strip from remaining
leather, approx. 10 cm (4") long and
1 cm ( 3 8 ") wide. Fold strip lengthwise
and edgestitch edges together. Attach
leather strip to zipper pull.
3. Lining and upper edge of bag
Sew lining pieces together as described
for bag, but leave approx. 30 cm
