New Year’s Eve, 1898
Staring off into the inky darkness, lost in thought, Sheriff Corby Hillhouse did not
hear the door open behind him. When his cousin Jason touched his arm, he jumped.
“C’mon back inside, Corby. It’s awfully cold and Star is worried about you being so
downhearted tonight.”
Corby flashed a false, casual smile, something he’d been doing for years. “I’m fine,
Jace. It felt a bit close in there with all the people.” The couples, his lonely heart
corrected. “You go back in. It’s almost midnight and if Star doesn’t get a New Year’s
kiss from you, she’ll whip out that bowie she carries for protection and skin us both
alive.”
Jason laughed before giving his widowed cousin a sympathetic pat on the back.
“My brother-in-law was just saying if you make a wish on the brightest star as the clock
strikes midnight that wish will come true.”
“Is that so?” Corby asked skeptically, his faith in wishes destroyed long ago.
Jason shrugged his broad shoulders. “That’s what Trevor said, but who knows?”
Corby answered with a sly grin, glad to see he wasn’t the only one not fond of the
arrogant surgeon.
The voice of Jason’s wife drifted through the partially opened door behind them.
“Has anyone seen my wayward husband?”
“You’d best get back inside,” Corby said.
Jason placed his hand on his cousin’s shoulder. “Happy New Year, Corby.”
“Same to you, Jace,” Corby replied out of courtesy, knowing full well that the
coming year might be every bit as miserable as the one ending.
Heaving a weary sigh, Corby brushed the dusting of snow from the porch railing
and leaned back, resting against the support column he’d helped his cousin cut from the
surrounding stand of trees. That was how long now? Close to six years.
Corby rolled a cigarette while trying to banish the twinge of jealousy that invariably
came when he thought of Jason and Star’s happy marriage. But hell, they deserved it
and he was glad his cousin wasn’t cursed as he was.
The sound of the partygoers inside counting down the final seconds of 1898
diverted Corby’s attention. The tall case clock near the front door began to chime.
Impulsively, Corby let his dark eyes search the sky for the brightest star and he made a
wish he felt would never be granted.
