I firmly believe that if I had marketed this version of Paul Curry's original, it would have sold for, at least, the cost of this book!
You'll need half a deck of red backed cards and half of blue.
These two half decks should contain all 52 cards in a mixed state.
Set the cards by placing one half onto the other and remember the first card of the lower half.
Make a face up overhand 'Ireland' shuffle.
Briefly... shuffle cards from one hand to the other In bunches but when you approach the centre, run the cards singly. Once past
the centre, the cards can be shuffled off in bunches again.
This has the effect of mixlng the cards but not mixing the relative halves.
You have merely made an, approximate, reversal, of the original order.
Any other false shuffle will suffice.
Hand the cards to the spectator and ask him to keep them face up. He is to look straight ahead and deal the cards into two piles,
one to the left and the other to the right. He does this without looking at the cards as he deals!
Explain that he is to try and separate the red cards from the others, sight unseen.
As he deals, watch to see which pile your remembered card ends up in.
The spectator will. eventually exhaust the cards. Ask him to look down and see how he did,
He will see a mixture of reds and blacks in each pile, unless he is genuinely psychici Pick up the pile that doesn't contain your
remembered card, spread through and show the mixture of reds and blacks. Table the cards face up then pick up the pile
containing your remembered card.
Spread through to show the mixed nature and as you square up, take a little finger break above your remembered card.
There is no heat on you at this point so... Pick up the tabled half and slip in into the break.
(You widen the break by pushing down with your thumb at the upper left comer and, at the same time, pulling the cards below
the break down with your fingers.)
This has, secretly, separated the red backed cards from the blue again.
Table the deck and finish by explaining that you did, after all, ask him to separate out the red cards from the others.
Have him flip the deck face down and spread to reveal that he has done Just that but.. · with the backs!!
