Foreword
This book is intended for those who have to deal with clinical hematological problems. It
is designed and written in such a way that the information on hematological problems is
constantly put into the clinical context in which they occur.
The author has extensive experience not only as a clinician evaluating patients in the
clinic but also as a laboratory hematologist. This book reflects this integration of clinic
and laboratory but written with a bias toward the clinic in a language that will appeal to
clinicians. There are a number of relatively new ways of looking at hematological pro-
blems that, in many ways, enhances understanding.
Every effort has been made to make sufficient basic and clinical knowledge available to
keep the interest of the reader. A textbook is probably only as good as if and how it is read.
This book will contribute to filling the gap that sometimes exists between basic science and
clinical medicine.
