Wire Hearts
Wire Hearts

Wire and mesh are perfect for card making
giving the designs depth and the added bonus
of the sparkle of real metal. Although the cards
are all different, the materials given will make
any or all of the designs.
Materials Required:
Silver wire mesh.
Scrap of Gold fabric mesh: SME07.
Thin Black enamelled wire: AWR08.
Hot glue gun: ADH09.
Clear glue sticks: ADH10.
Small pliers: AWR11 and wire cutters:AWR10.
Acrylic paint: Gold, White and subdued Greys
and Greens.
Gold pen, wire and 2 small beads.
Cream and Black thread.
Scraps of card and/or hand made papers: Black,
Dark Brown, Maroon, Cream and Gold.
P. V.A. Craft adhesive and sticky tape.
Card mount: SF03U or DEC3U, White or Cream.
To Make The Cards:
Gold Heart:
Tear a strip of cream hand made paper to
approx. 3.5cm wide and to about the same height
as the card. Using P.V.A. glue, stick the paper
strip close to the left hand edge of the front panel
of a parchment cream card.
Cut a 3.5cm square of gold and a 2.5cm
square of dark brown card. Using the diagram,
make a template and cut a heart from the fabric
mesh. Glue the mesh onto the brown square
then glue this in turn onto
the gold square.
Cut two 14cm lengths of
gold wire and curl one end
of each, this can be done
by hand or by winding the
wire just a turn or so, round
something quite slim such as
a fine paintbrush handle. I added a 7mm tube
bead to the other end of one wire and a tiny
gold ring to the second wire, any small beads
will be fine.
Sticky tape the wires to the back of the square
containing the heart. Place the square about
three quarters of the way up the card and glue
into position. Lightly bend the wires a little to
give them shape.
Actual Size
Wire Heart:
I made the background paper for the heart
as follows. Take a small piece of white card and
place it onto a larger piece of scrap paper. Heat
up the glue gun and load with a clear glue stick.
Squeeze the glue lightly onto the white card
moving the gun around so thin squiggles are
made randomly across the card. Allow the glue
to blob in some places by keeping the gun still

for a short while before moving on again. This will
give contrasting areas of glue.
Once the glue has cooled and set, paint over
with a random mix of greens, greys and gold acrylic
paint. You don’t need to cover every bit of the paper
with paint as tiny white areas showing through add
to the hand made effect.
Now for the heart, cut an 18cm length of black
wire and bend it to shape using the close up picture
to guide you. Cut the background paper to 4cm x
5cm and place the heart onto it.
Using black thread, stitch the heart onto the
paper using about 8 stitches in total round the heart.
Keep the stitches small
on the front of the work
by bringing the needle
up close to the wire and
back down again just the
other side of the wire.
Use tape to hold the ends
of the thread on the back.
Cut a black oblong
4.5cm x 5.5cm and glue
this behind the worked
heart. Glue the whole
assembly onto the card
mount.
Maroon Heart:
My heart is painted in
maroon and white to give a
marbled finish, you could use
a piece of marbled card or
maroon card with a little white
paint swirled over it. Cut out
the heart using the diagram
to make a template.
Actual Size
Cut a 14cm length of thin black wire, make a coil at
one end, place the long end of the wire across the ‘dip’
in the top of the heart and bend it round behind the
heart so it hangs down beneath it. Bend the lower end
into a loose ‘S’ shape and trim if necessary. Use a little
sticky tape on the back of the heart to hold it in place.
Cut a 3.5cm x 6.5cm oblong from black card and
glue it onto the card mount. Cut a 10cm length of silver
mesh and place it over the mounted panel. Gently
pull and bend it to distort the shape and make it more
interesting.
Glue the heart onto the mesh and whilst the glue
on the back of the heart is still wet press both onto the
card panel adding a little more glue if necessary.
