Chain 45. sl stitch in first stitch ch to form ring.
Work in rounds of sc.
Work 4 rounds even. *
Next round: work 2 decreases evenly distributed across rnd.
New round: work even.
Next round: work 3 decs. evenly distributed.
Next round: work even. *
Repeat these 4 rounds. decreasing every other row. until piece measures 4,25 inches from beg.
You should have approx. 10 stitches . Fasten off.
sleeves
Chain 18 and work back and forth in rows of sc.
Decrease 1 stitch at each edge. every 4 rows (3 times).
Work 13 rows. even.
Fasten off.
head
Chain 3. sl stitch in first stitch ch to form ring.
Round 1: work 6 sc in ring.
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around.
Round 3: * 1 sc. inc. 1 stitch (for each inc. work 2 sc in 1 st) * (6 times).
Round 4: * 2 sc. inc. 1 stitch * (6 times).
Round 5: * 5 sc. inc. 1 stitch * (11 times) - 35 stitches .
Work 10 rounds even.
Next round: (begin decreases) * decrease 1 stitch (skip 1 st). 5 sc * (15 times).
Next round: * decrease 1 stitch. 3 sc * (4 times).
Next round: * decrease 1 stitch. 2 SC * (4 times).
While working decs. insert ball as you work.
To embroider the mouth. make one or two satin stitches 0,4 inches long. and 3 to 4 satin stitches 0,6 inches apart for the eyes.
hands
Chain 8 and work in rows of sc.
Row 2: * 1 sc. inc. 1 (2 sc in 1 st) * - 12 sc.
Rows 3 to 8: Work even on 12 sc.
Finishing
Cut the cardboard following design on chart.
Shape the cone overlapping the 2 edges approximately by 2 inches at the base (1,5 inches : for the angels).
fasten with a few staples. Slip this cone inside the crocheted piece.
Fold in 0.25 inches at lower edge of the crocheted piece over the cone and glue. Sew sleeve seams. joining the two thicknesses at top.
At top of cone. on each side. place one sleeve.
Sew hands closed and place hands inside sleeves.
Insert a wooden toothpick halfway through the base of the head and the other half through the upper part of the cone.
Then sew the head to the neck.
hair
Cut many strands of yarn and place them on top of head. making a few back-stitches
In center to form a part.
Trim ends with scissors
33 - BABY JESUS
Sport weight yarn: Pink. Yellow. Red.
Heavy weight yarn: natural color;
a small piece of White felt:
little pieces of straw;
a small paper maché ball.
With the natural wool. chain 12 and work even in sc for 2.75 inches.
Fasten off. Fold in two lengthwise and whipstitch together the lower edges and the side edges.
Stuff with cotton and sew opening closed.
With Pink. chain 3. sl stitch in first stitch to form ring.
Then continue in rounds. working alternately:
1 round with 2 sc in each sc: and 2 rounds with 5 incs. evenly distributed across round until you obtain 22 stitches .
Work even for 5 rounds.
Then work 3 rounds decrease 5 stitches evenly distributed on each round. insert the paper maché ball while working the decreases.
Embroider the mouth with Bright Pink and the eyes with Turquoise.
Cut 10 strands of Yellow yarn 2 inches long and place on top of head. and 2 strands of same yarn 1,75 inches long for the forehead.
Sew head to body.
Wind 2 strands of Red yarn around the body to shape the criss-cross.
collarette
With Gold chain 10.
Row 1: work in sc to end.
Row 2: * sl st: skip 1 st: 3 sc in 1 st: skip 1 st: sl stitch * repeat from * to * once more.
Sew the collarette around neck edge. placing one shell in center front.
manger
Cut a piece of cardboard 4 inches x 1.5 inches and cover with a piece of white felt.
glue some pieces of straw on it. letting them extend 0.75 inches from the edges.
Glue a piece of felt 3,5 inches x 1,25 inches on the straw. and glue Baby Jesus on top of it.
34 - VIRGIN MARY
Gold metallic yarn;
Sport weight yarn: Pink. White. Turquoise. Yellow;
Fingering weight: White.
Work: with Gold 4 rounds; with White 2 rounds: with Gold 2 rounds; with White 2 rounds;
with Gold 2 rounds and. continue with Turquoise.
Work: with Gold 3 rows: with White 2 rows; with Gold 2 rows and continue with Turquoise.
head and hands
Work in Pink throughout.
With Bright Pink embroider the mouth and with Turquoise embroider the eyes.
Cut 44 strands 10 inches long of Yellow for the hair. divide loose strands into 3 parts at sides and braid.
veil
With White and knitting needles no. 6. cast on 40 stitches and work in stockinette stitch.
beginning and ending rows with 3 stitches in garter stitch for border.
Work even for 10 inches.
Bind off.
halo
With Gold. chain 3 and sl stitch in first stitch ch to form ring.
Round 1: 6 sc in ring.
Continue working in sc and on every round. inc. 6 stitches evenly distributed across round.
until you obtain a flat disk 3 inches in diameter.
Work even the last 2 rounds.
Place the veil on top of head and the halo slightly in back.
35 - SAINT JOSEPH
Sport weight yarn: Brown. Pink. Light Blue;
Mohair yarn: Chamois;
Acrylic yarn: Rust.
Work: with Brown 4 rounds; with Rust 2 rounds; with Brown 2 rounds; with Rust 2 rounds;
with Brown 2 rounds; with Rust 2 rounds and continue with Brown.
Work with Brown throughout.
Work with Pink throughout.
Embroider the mouth with Red and the eyes with Light Blue.
Cut 25 strands about 4.75 inches long of Chamois yarn for the back of the head.
and a few strands 1.25 inches to 1.5 inches long for the front; trim ends with scissors.
Sew small piece of Chamois Boucle yarn around the face for the beard.
With Gold work same as for Virgin Mary's halo and place slightly in back of head.
36 - THE OX
Sport weight yarn: Beige. Brown. White.
A piece of foam rubber 1.25 inches wide to be cut following design on chart.
right side
With Beige chain 18 and work in sc throughout.
Work 7 rows even (the first stitch row being worked on the wrong side of work).
Next row: for the head. inc. 7 stitches at right edge.
Next 2 rows: decrease 1 stitch at each edge (for each decrease , 1 stitch from edge. skip 1 st).
Next row: at left edge. leave 8 stitches unworked for the top of back.
and continue on stitches at right edge. decreasing 1 stitch at right edge. on every row (6 times).
Next row: decrease 1 stitch at each edge.
left side
Work same as for right side reversing shapings.
center strip
With Beige chain 6 and work in sc throughout for 15.75 inches
ears
(Make two). With Brown chain 5. work in sc for 4 rows.
Then decrease 1 stitch at beg. of every row until no stitches remain.
horns
(Make two). With White chain 8. sl stitch in first stitch ch to form ring.
Work even in sc for 5 rounds.
then decrease 1 stitch on every round until no stitches remain.
finishing
With a whipstitch join the two sides and the center strip.
Slipping in the foam rubber piece as you work. On top of head. sew a horn on each seam.
Below the horns. on each side. sew an ear gathering the lower edge.
With Turquoise. embroider for the eyes a small circle on each side.
With Brown. on each seam. embroider a dot for the nostrils.
working tight stitches in order to take-in the strip slightly at this point.
With Brown yarn used double. work a chain and wind it around in a flat spiral for the spots;
make one round spot and two oval spots.
For the tail, cut 3 strands of Brown yarn and 3 strands of Beige yarn 14 inches long;
fold them in half and braid them for 2,5 inches, trim ends 4,75 inches from top.
Sew to body.
37 - THE DONKEY
Sport weight yarn: Pink and Grey tweed.
With tweed yarn chain 18 and work in sc throughout.
Work 9 rows even (the first stitch row being worked on the wrong side of work).
Next 2 rows: decrease 1 stitch at left edge.
Next row: work only on the first stitch 5 stitches at right edge.
Next row: inc. 5 stitches at the end of row for the head.
Then work 4 rows. increasing 1 stitch at left edge on every row:
AT SAME TIME. on the 3 rd and the 4th of these 4 rows. decrease 1 stitch at right edge.
Then work 5 rows. decreasing 1 stitch at right edge on every row;
AT SAME TIME. on the 4 th and the 5th of these 5 rows, decrease 1 stitch at left edge.
front strip
With tweed yarn chain 4 and work even in sc for 3.5 inches
(Make two). With tweed chain 5 and work even in sc for 7 rows.
Next row: decrease 1 stitch at beg. and end of row - 5 stitches .
Next row: decrease 1 stitch at beg. and end of row - 3 stitches .
Next row: decrease 1 stitch - 2 stitches .
Next row: decrease 1 stitch - 1 stitch.
Then with Pink. work another piece alike for inside of ear.
Sew right and left sides to each edge of the front strip. to the end of strip; continue joining both sides.
leaving the base opened; insert cotton batting in opening; then for the base.
sew a strip of white felt 1,5 inches x 3,5 inches, rounding the edges.
Line the ears with the Pink pieces. overlapping the 2 edges over inches at the tip of ear and enclosing the Pink side in it.
Sew one ear on each side of the head, tightening at the base and placing the Pink sides inside.
For the eyes. embroider a circle in Dark Blue on each side of head.
To tighten the muzzle. with Black. embroider 2 horizontal satin stitches 0.75 inches wide. inserting needle deeply inside.
For the mane, with tweed yarn. chain 50 and work 1 row in loop fur stitch as follows: *
insert hook in 1 st; wind yarn around hook as to knit 1 stitch.
then above and around the index finger of the left hand. and under and around crochet hook.
Draw the loops through the stitch. yarn over hook. and draw all the loops on hook *.
Repeat from * to * for each loop.
Then fold this strip in half. and join the two edges with a fine whipstitch.
Sew mane on top and back of head.
tail
Cut 6 strands of tweed yarn 14 inches long. fold them in half, braid them tightly for 2,75 inches
Trim ends 3,5 inches from top.
Sew to back on seam.
front
With Black 'lam. chain 2 and work in sc. inc. 1 stitch. at right edge. every other row (6 times).
then on next 6 rows. and 2 stitches at same edge on next row.
Break yarn and fasten off.
Work a second piece to match reversing shapings.
place this to right of first stitch piece and adding 3 stitches between the two pieces.
cont. working across all stitches ..
decrease 1 stitch. at both ends on every row (5 times).
and 2 stitches . at both ends. on every row (4 times).
Stitch the front and back tog. and work a row of sc in Black around bottom edge.
neck frills
With black. chain 30.
Row 1: 1 sc in each stitch.
Row 2: * 2 sc in 1 stitch. * 5 sc . (5 times).
Row 3: ch 2. 35 dc.
Row 4: ch 2. 3 dc in first stitch space between 2 dc. * skip 1 space. 1 sc in next space.
skip 1 space. 4 dc. in next space * and finish row with 1 sc in last stitch.
Row 5: ch 2. 1 dc before first stitch dc. * 2 dc between 2 dc (3 times). 1 sc at each side of sc * and finish row with 2 dc (3 times).
Row 6: ch 2. 1 dc in first stitch dc. * 2 dc in each dc. 1 sc in each sc * and finish row with 2 dc (6 times).
Row 7: ch 1. 1 hdc in first stitch dc. * 10 dc on next 10 dc. 2 hdc on last dc. 2 sc on 2 sc. 2 hdc in first stitch dc.
Work a second frill to match using White yarn and fastening off at end of 6th row.
mouth
With pink yarn chain 2. Work 2 sc in 2nd ch. from hook. then 2 rows sc inc. 1 stitch. at both ends of each row.
Work 1 row even.
Next row: 3 sc turn.
Next row: 1 sl. stitch. . 1 sc. 1 sl. stitch.
Rejoin yarn and work other side to match.
Using crochet pieces as pattern. cut-out lining on double fabric.
Stitch lining sections tog. and stuff firmly with kapok or polyester.
Stitch tog. front and back sections of crochet Pierrot and slip over stuffed shape.
Stitch the mouth in place 2,75 inches up from last row of sc.
Embroider the eyes in chain stitch using Blue yarn as follows: work 2 olive shaped eyes.
spacing them 2 inches apart and 0.75 inches up from top of mouth.
The olive shapes should be approx. 1 inches wide and : 0,75 inches high.
On top of these embroider 2 discs in chain stitch. 0,60 inches in diam. in Black yarn.
Also using Black. embroider 2 arcs above the eyes for the eyebrows.
Place the hat on Pierrot's head. holding it in place with one or two stitches at the back.
Place neck frills around his neck and join at the back with a few stitches . along the first stitch two rows.
Using black yarn make two pompons 2,25 inches in diam. and stitch to front of body.
spacing them 3,5 inches apart. Make 8 pompons. 2 inches in diam. and stitch one at bottom end of each arm.
and 3 at bottom of each leg. spacing them 2,75 inches apart.
HOW TO MAKE POMPONS
Cut 2 cardboard disks 2,75 inches 3 inches {4 inches in diameter (fig. 1).
Cut out hole in center of both. the larger the hole, the more yarn you will be able to wind around and the thicker will be your pompon.
